Do You Need a Website If You Have a Google Business Profile?

Your website gets you found when people search your name. Your Google Business Profile gets you found when they search the service. Those are not the same search.

Yes. They do different things.

Your website is what people find when they search your name. Your Google Business Profile is what gets you found when someone searches the service: "personal trainer Kingston," "sports massage near me," "nutritionist Surbiton." These are searches from people who do not know you exist yet.

Those are not the same search. The second one is the one worth showing up for.

What the profile actually does

When someone searches a local service on Google, a box of three businesses appears above all the website results. It has photos, star ratings, a phone number, and sometimes a booking button. Almost everyone clicks from that box.

That box is built entirely from Google Business Profiles. If you are not in it, the search has already moved past you. Your website never gets seen.

It also feeds Google Maps. If someone drops a pin or asks Maps for a recommendation, your business only appears if it has a profile.

And increasingly, it feeds AI tools. When Google's AI Overview, Microsoft Copilot, or ChatGPT answers a local search query, it pulls from business profiles with good data and reviews. A business with no profile is invisible to those tools.

Do you need a website if you already have a Google Business Profile?

Yes, and the reason is not the one most people expect. A profile and a website are not alternatives. They answer two different searches, and a business usually needs both.

The profile catches them. The website converts them. They are not competing. They are two steps in the same journey.

Your website still matters, but for different reasons. It handles people who already know you, explains your services in detail, and converts an interested visitor into a booking.

The Business Profile handles discovery: getting in front of people who do not know your name yet but need what you do.

Won't it just sit there doing nothing?

Only if you leave it empty.

A profile Google treats as trustworthy has:

  • Real photos of your work, not stock images

  • A description that says exactly what you do and where

  • Every service listed, with a short description for each

  • Reviews coming in consistently

  • Posts updated at least twice a month

A profile that was set up once and never touched looks like a business that might not be operating any more. Google treats it that way too: it gets pushed down, or removed from local results altogether.

What happens to businesses in Kingston that skip it

Your local competitors number in the tens, not thousands. A coaching or therapy practice in Kingston is competing with fifteen or twenty others for the same searches. Some of them have a complete, active profile. Most do not.

The ones with an active profile appear first. The ones without one do not appear at all.

That gap is not closing on its own. If you want to see how this plays out in practice, here is what I found when I checked who actually ranks for wellness and fitness searches in Kingston.

The short answer

If you run a local service business in Kingston and someone is searching for what you do right now, your Google Business Profile is either showing them you exist or it is not. A website alone does not do that.

Setting it up correctly takes a few hours. If you want a starting point, here is the checklist I use for every client profile. Keeping it active takes less time than you probably spend on admin each week. If that admin time is the real problem, this is where to start.

If you run a coaching or therapy practice in Kingston, the same logic applies, though it is a question coaches ask more often than most.

Setting the profile up is one job. Keeping it working alongside a website, reviews and the content that feeds both is a different one, and it is the part that quietly stops happening once the week gets busy. If you would rather it did not depend on you remembering, this is the version I run for wellness businesses in Kingston.
